Wildlife Photography…The Barking Deer or Indian Muntjac

YOU MIGHT NOT expect a deer less than two feet tall to make one of the most startling noises in the rainforest, but it turns out that muntjac can be pretty vocal.
Muntjacs live in south and Southeast Asia, and this Bornean yellow muntjac (Muntiacus atherodes) is one of the 12 species.
Muntjacs, also known as barking deer and Mastreani deer, are small Deer of the genus Muntiacus. Muntjacs are thought to have begun appearing 15–35 million years ago, with remains found in Miocene deposits in France, Germany and Poland.
The present-day species are native to South Asia and can be found in India, Sri Lanka , Myanmar , the Indonesian islands, Taiwan and Southern China. They are also found in the lower Himalayas ( Terai regions of Nepal and ) and in some areas of Japan.
It’s a Baby Muntjjac the picture I clicked from quite a distance in a deep hilly forest of Jim Corbett range.
This species is not endangered but the loss of forest habitat has had a negative impact on their population. They are classified as Near Threatened by the
IUCN red list of threatened species.
After I captured these cute images of the Barking Deer I compiled the informations from various sources and it was truly my first encounter with this species of deer in the wild.
