Coppersmith Barbet…..Street Photography
The coppersmith barbet otherwise known as “crimson-breasted barbet “”or “coppersmith”(Psilopogon haemacephalus), is a bird with crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been so same as to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer.
It is a resident bird found in the Indian subcontinent and other parts of Southeast Asia too.
Like other barbets, they mostly chisel out a hole inside a tree trunk to build their nest. They are mainly fruit eating birds but they too take insects sometimes especially the winged termites.
In the “Western Ghats”, it partly overlaps with the “Malabar barbet”which is of a very similar size but having a more rapid call. The red forehead, yellow eye-ring and throat patch with streaked underside and green upper parts,of Coppersmith Barbet is fairly distinctive.
The Juveniles are duller and lack the red patches. But both the sexes are mostly alike.
The Sri Lankan form has more black on the face, more red on the breast and darker streaks on the underside.
It reminds me my own memorable days from Buxar in Bihar when I used to see and photograph a lot of these Barbets from a dry tree adjacent to my balcony but this time it’s really too close from my rooftop from my neighbourhood in Noida.
