କନିଅର (Odia) Kolke (Bengali)

Botanical Name:Cascabela thevetia

It’s is an evergreen Tropical shrub or small tree. Its leaves are willow-like, linear-lanceolate, and glossy green in color. They are covered in waxy coating to reduce water loss (typical of oleanders). Its stem is green turning silver/gray as it ages.

କନିଅର ଗଛ ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ ଓ ଭାରତର ପ୍ରାୟ ସବୁଠାରେ ଦେଖିବାକୁ ମିଳେ । ଏହାର ଫୁଲ ହଳଦିଆ, ଧଳା ଓ ନାଲି ରଙ୍ଗରେ ଥାଏ । ଏହାର କାଣ୍ତର ରଙ୍ଗ ସବୁଜ ଏବଂ ଯେତେବେଳେ ଏହି ଗଛଟିର ବୟସ ବଢ଼େ ଏହାର ରଙ୍ଗ ଧଳା ବା ଧୂସରକୁ ବଦଳିଯାଏ । ଏହି ଫୁଲଟି ଭଗବାନଙ୍କୁ ଲାଗି ହୁଏ । ଏହାର ଫଳ ବିଷାକ୍ତ ଅଟେ ।

SEASON OF BLOOMING

Flowers bloom from summer to fall. The flowers are long funnel-shaped sometimes-fragrant yellow (less commonly apricot, sometimes white) flowers are in few-flowered terminal clusters.

Its fruit is deep red-black in color encasing a large seed that bears some resemblance to a ‘Chinese lucky nut’ & the entire plant including its leaves & fruits are poisonous except a few bird species who are however known to feed on them without any ill effects. These include the sunbirds, Asian koel, red-whiskered bulbul, white-browed bulbul, red-vented bulbul, brahminy myna, common myna and common grey hornbill.
